“Its nice to see fresh, young musicians carrying on the traditions of Brazilian music. “Finn Magill displays a love and authenticity that can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil. His style is playful and light, yet soulful and passionate. Congratulations!”
- Airto Moreira (Weather Report, Miles Davis, Chick Corea)
Canta Violino is lead by Andrew Finn Magill, a versatile American violinist who has been featured on MTV and NPR and toured multiple continents. He is fast becoming one of the leading exponents of Brazilian violin. After relocating to Rio de Janeiro in 2014, he began studying choro intensively with legendary violinists Nicolas Krassik & Ricardo Herz, bandolinist Luís Barcelos, and saxofonist/clarinetist Pedro Paes.
After frequenting the many “rodas” (circular jam sessions) of Rio de Janeiro he soon formed The Andrew Finn Quartet which has twice been featured by the city of Rio de Janeiro’s Viva o Talento performing arts series and performed three times at the Casa do Choro. The band includes ex-member of Tira Poeira Fábio Nin, percussionist/pandeirista Bidu Campeche who has performed with Hamilton de Holanda and Maurício Carrilho and cavaquinho player Marcos Tannuri, a pupil of Luciana Rabello and winner of “Best Compositon” at the XI Heitor Villa-Lobos Music Festival.
In addition to his quartet, Magill leads Violino no Choro alongside Brazilian violinist Guilherme Pimenta, a project dedicated to honoring the violin in choro and Brazilian music.
Andrew Finn Magill and his music have been featured on Brazilian radio MEC 98.1 and the Brazilian national newspaper O Globo. Fluent in Portuguese and passionate for education, he has given multiple workshops at Rio’s Escola Pro Artemusic school and various music camps across the U.S.
